BREAKING BAD#Limbo HenGoku with a review on the well known series Breaking Bad Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller Age certification: Rated R Directer: Vince Gilligan Writer(s): Vince Gilligan Notable actor(s): Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, RJ Mitte, Anna Gunn Release Information: January 20, 2008 - September 29, 2013, English Plot Outline: A chemistry teacher diagnosed with a terminal lung cancer, teams up with his former student, Jesse Pinkman, to cook and sell crystal meth Review Acting 10/10: The acting in this movie is probably one of the best acting I have ever seen. Bryan Cranston kills it as Walter White. There's a reason why he won an emmy for each season. Aaron Paul also did a good job in the show. Everyone in this show brought their A game. The acting was very believable and made the characters likable for what they were and made them hateble for what they were. Writing 10/10: I thought the writing in the movie was flawless as well. The story is very intriguing and the characters are introduced. There is some very good character development in this show as well. I would say that there was one unnecessary episode but even it was enjoyable to watch. The dailog is very good, too. Soundtrack 10/10: I thought the soundtrack in the movie was pretty good and that it fit each scene perfectly. I don't remember much being played but I know I liked it a lot. Especially the opening intro. Visuals 10/10: This show looks pretty good and I thought everything looked real. The blood looks real, the gun fights look real, everything was eye candy. The visuals added to overall expereince Feels 10/10: I was very emotionally invested in the movie. I really felt for Aaron Paul's charater, Jessie Pinkman. The things he was going through, the amount of loses he had was just sad to me. Personal Experiences: This a really good show. First of all, I like how they show the main characters decline to villainy, I thought they did that really well. My favorite character throughout the entire show is Jessie Pinkman. I thought he was pretty badass. You know how some shows had bad seasons? Not this one. This show literally gets better and darker each season. There are no bad seasons what so ever. There is absolutely nothing I did not like about this show. Overall Rating 10/10 Amazing Would I recommend it? Of course I would recommend one of the best dramas ever made. If you have not seen this show, what're you doing? TTPK Tal reviews one of his all-time favourites, the highly successful and critically acclaimed The Dark Knight. The Dark KnightMovie: The Dark Knight
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama, Thriller Director: Christopher Nolan Age Certification: PG-13 Writers: Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan, David S. Goyer Notable Actors: Heath Ledger, Chrisitian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart Release: 2008 (Various), English Plot Outline: The Dark Knight shows how the Batman's presence in Gotham City has also allowed for the rise of criminals such as the Joker and the clash of their different mentalities. REVIEW Acting: 10/10 Even though Christian Bale's Batman is one of the worst, he is, in my opinion, the best Bruce Wayne ever, supplemented with strong performances by Michael Caine as Alfred, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox and outstanding ones by Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart. But it's time to get to the real star, Heath Ledger. He is the best Joker to exist on screen, with one of the finest performances on film ever. He sold his role as The Joker and this can be terrifyingly real for some people. Writing: 10/10 The script was brilliant for a dark superhero movie. The story was great, thrilling and had The Batman in ruins at times, offering great action, great plot progression and adequate pacing. The Nolan brothers' screenplay along with Nolan's and Goyer's adaptation of the comic book story is very well done. The Dark Knight does have some minor flaws like the opening scene and the hospital scene being forgotten quickly. Directing: 10/10 Nolan is a unique director, but he has things he always does like the disjointed story telling. Here, however, it fully works. Every time I rewatch, I see something new in the movie that I haven't seen before. Nolan directed The Dark Knight amazingly. Soundtrack: 8/10 The sound assets are great, but the soundtrack for the motion picture isn't particularly noteworthy. While not being bad, it's not great either and it's not something I'd go and listen to in my free time. Visuals: 10/10 The action is amazing, thrilling, constantly moving, perfectly paced and looks amazing. The disturbingly high budget helped alot with that. "Feels": 10/10 **MINOR PLOT SPOILERS** In The Dark Knight, you really feel the mental issues that both the main characters, villains and the characters to become villains are all really relatable with their own tragedies and character development. I can even relate to the Joker. Personal experience: The Dark Knight is my 10th favorite film. While I do see its flaws, like the bullshit ending, it still is an amazing movie you can watch solely for Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker. Seeing this movie and counting 16 times, not getting sick of even a single moment really means it's great for rewatching. Overall rating: The Dark Knight gets a 10/10. Would I recommend to others: Very much so. %Limbo Hengoku had a horrifying experience he wants to share with us: the movie Sinister
Sinister Genre: Horror, Mystery, Thriller Age Certification: Rated R Director: Scott Derrickson Writers: Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill Notable Actors: Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, Fred Thompson, James Ransone, Clare Foley, Michael Hall D'Addario Release: 10/5/2012, English Plot Outline: A true-crime writer finds a cache of 8mm home movies films that suggest the murder he is currently researching is the work of a serial killer whose career dates back to the 1960s. Review Acting: 7.5/10 I thought the acting was okay and believable most of the time. But at times, when they were supposed to be scared, they were not really believable. Writing: 8/10 The story is interesting and the characters are introduced properly. There is some character development as well. Characters are interesting and there are no unnecessary scenes. Though, at times, the story is very predictable. Sound/Music: 7/10 I thought the soundtrack was okay and it fit each scene well. Sound effects were good, too, but nothing was really outstanding. Visuals: 8/10 The visuals was good and the spirits looked very real, positively adding to the overall experience. Sinister had good shots of the characters. In addition, I thought the special effects looked pretty neat, but some scenes would've needed a little more work. "Feels": 8/10 I did get emotionally invested because Sinister is really terrifying, but I didn't really bond with any of the characters. I was, however, rooting for them to overcome their situation. Furthermore, the spirits themselves will make your hair stand up with fear. As a whole, Sinister is a horrifying experience. Personal Experiences: When I went to watch Sinister, I was like yeah, this is gonna be a just another scary movie, I've seen it all before. Boy was I wrong, it scared the living daylights out of me. I was surprised by the first shots. It just leaves me going "holy cow, so this is what I am in for". It's just disturbing imagery, It's not the last time you're gonna see it. There's not really much I didn't like about this movie but I got home not being able to sleep. Overall Rating: 7.5/10 Would I recommend it? If you're looking for movie that will scare you to death then Sinister is for you. Give it a shot. +Factor is having a change of pace, this time reviewing the literary crime classic And Then There Were None by Mistress of Mystery Agatha Christie.
And Then There Were None Shelves: Crime, Thriller Age Range: Adult Author: Agatha Christie Published: 1939 Pages: 264 Synopsis: Ten people, each with something to hide and something to fear, are invited to a lonely mansion on Indian Island by a host who fails to appear but leaves a recording accusing all of undetected murder. Cut off by his orders, one by one each die according to a nursery rhyme Ten Little Indians. A confession in a bottle solves how nobody remains alive. Review Characters: 8-10 I loved all of the characters in this book. I found all of their back stories interesting and it made them very enjoyable to read about. I found it very gripping and wanted to find out more about the character back stories. Writing: 8-10 The book was very well written and I always wanted to know what happened next to each character in the story. Very interesting and enjoyable. There was a small pacing problem in the beginning, but it recovered. "Feels": 10-10 I really bonded with these characters and could get emotionally invested because after what happens in the story I could understand what they did and why they did it. I really loved how the characters changed how their entire personalities and almost went insane because of what was happening on the island. I feel that was very well done, also it happened gradually and it wasn't rushed. Personal Experience: I enjoyed reading this immensely. I found it really cool how the continuous character deaths caused all the characters to go insane and break the trust that they had for one another. It seemed realistic and so believable that it kept me hooked the entire time to see what happened to everyone at the end of the novel. I felt that the epilogue was totally necessary to end the book and subtly reveal the killer. Overall this was an amazing read that was on my summer reading list. Would I Recommend This? Yeah of course. If you're looking for a classic thriller that is very interesting, and has great characters this is the book for you. Overall Rating: 9.5/10 The serial reviewist %Limbo Hengoku is back, this time reviewing Quentin Tarantino's masterpiece Pulp Fiction.
Pulp Fiction Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller Age Certification: Rated R Director: Quentin Tarantino Writers: Roger Avary, Quentin Tarantino Notable Actors: John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer Release: 10/14/1994, English Plot Outline: The lives of two mob hit men, a boxer, a gangster's wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption. Review Acting: 10/10 The acting was excellent and very believable. Everyone in this movie did a great job and they were enjoyable to watch. Writing: 10/10 The story of Pulp Fiction is interesting and the characters are introduced. There was some good character development as well. The dialogue in Pulp Fiction is really well written and it's very quotable as well. There are no unnecessary scenes in this movie. Sound/Music: 10/10 I thought the soundtrack was really good and fit each scene perfectly. Visuals: 7/10 The visuals for Pulp Fiction are great. It had good shots of the characters and scenery, but it is mostly dialogue dependent, so the visuals weren't outstanding in any way. "Feels": 7/10 I didn't really get emotionally invested. However, I could relate to Bruce Willis's character because I would react the same way if I was in similar circumstances. Pulp Fiction as a whole was really engrossing and it had me happy the entire time. It was kind of funny, too. Personal Experiences: [PLOT SPOILERS] Pulp Fiction is amazing, from the get go, I knew what I was in for. Great dialogue, a lot of racial slurs and obscure originality. Whenever you see a movie that has a lot of racial slurs and nobody gets upset over it, that tells you that the writing is really good. One thing I liked about it was that it wasn't in chronological order. Instead, the chapters were all mixed up in a really stylistic kind of way. Half the fun after I was done watching it, was piecing everything together. Another thing I enjoyed were the characters, they were fantastic. My favorite is Jules. I honestly cannot think of any negatives for this movie. Overall Rating: 8/10 Would I recommend it? Yeah, I would recommend this movie because it's very entertaining. If you like great dialogue in movies you will love Pulp Fiction. The serial reviewist strikes again. This time, %Limbo Hengoku reviews the latest installment of the monster movie Godzilla.
Godzilla Genre: Action, Adventure, Thriller, Sci-Fi, Fantasy Age Certification: PG-13 Director: Gareth Edwards Writer: David Callaham, Based on Godzilla by Toho Notable Actors: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, Bryan Cranston Release: 5/16/2014, English Plot Outline: The world's most famous monster is pitted against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence. Review Acting: 8/10 The acting was good and believable. Bryan Cranston did a really good job. Everyone else did a good job, too, but at times the acting didn't look believable. Aside from that, the acting was awesome. Writing: 8/10 The story is intriguing and the characters are introduced properly. There is good character development as well. There are some minor plot holes but they could honestly be overlooked. Sound/Music: 8/10 I thought the soundtrack in Godzilla was okay and it fit each scene perfectly. In addition, the sound effects were great. They were used to correctly accentuate each scene. Visuals: 10/10 The visuals for Godzilla are aswesome and there were really great shots of the characters and scenery. The monsters looked really real too. The cinematography was outstanding, too. "Feels": 7/10 I did get emotionally invested because there are some emotional moments in this movie. I really felt for Bryan Cranston's character because of what happened in the first 15 minutes. I actually felt attached to him. I did kind of bond with Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character but not as much as Bryan's character because he is a bit emotionally distant. Godzilla as a whole was very suspenseful and exciting. Personal Experiences: I actually enjoyed Godzilla a lot. What I loved most about it is that I knew nothing about it. It's really cool going into a movie that is shrouded in secrecy so that you don't know what you're in for. Another thing I liked about it is that it didn't really focus on the monsters but on the humans trying to live in a world with monsters. Godzilla did a really good job of making me feel like I am in a world were Godzilla exists and monsters are destroying civilization as we know it. Furthermore, I loved the characters in this movie. The only thing I hoped for when watching Godzilla was to see more of the monsters fighting. But when they did fight, cool but not as cool as, say, Pacific Rim. It was more realistic than that though, that's for sure. Aside from that, I enjoyed Godzilla a bunch. Overall Rating: 8/10 Would I recommend it? Yes I would recommend it because it's actually pretty good. Give it a shot, it's worth it. +Factor has quite a different view on things. His amazement stayed earthbound when watching Gravity.
Gravity Genre: Sci-fi, Thriller Age Certification: PG-13 Director: Alfonso Cuarón, Jonás Cuarón Writers: Alfonso Cuarón, Jonás Cuarón Notable Actors: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney Release: 10/4/2013 Synopsis: A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after a catastrophe destroys their shuttle and leaves them adrift in orbit. Review Acting: 4/10 I really didn't find really any of the acting appealing at all, especially George Clooney's acting. He had one tone throughout the entire movie and it really bored me to tears. Sandra Bullock, to me, didn't really put up a great performance either. I could tell that her reaction was pretty fake and I found it really funny. Writing: 1/10 I was really disappointed about how the plot was made. I think it could've been written much better than how it is now. Also, the jump scares aren't really all that scary at all. I was not pleased with the writing and it could've been much much better. Also, there ware lots of unnecessary scenes, even a 10 minute scene that was completely pointless. Sound/Music: 7/10 For the many faults Gravity has, it does have a nice soundtrack to it, which helps add an effect to some scenes but not all of them. Visuals: 7/10 I did find the visuals appealing as well. I thought that they captured what space would look like and they did a very good job with it as well. "Feels": 1/10 I couldn't really bond with any of the characters. It's really hard to relate to a character lost in space because, well no one has been lost in space before and I can't see why Sandra Bullock would do some of the things she did in this film. None of the characters were really interesting, George Clooney's character was pretty bland and we get no backstory or anything, basically Sandra Bullock couldn't pull it off for me. Personal Experiences: [MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS] I found this movie to be pretty boring. I didn't like how the film exploited the silence and made it lose value, the silence factor could've been used much better instead of overusing it. Also, I didn't like how the plot was set up, if Houston told you were going to get hit by space debris you might as well get back inside before you die and get back to Earth. I would've liked it much better if they got hit by surprise because I found the way the writers did it to be incredibly illogical. The thing about the death of Sandra Bullock' daughter in this movie sounded so unbelievable and then they completely drop that scene and never focused on it until the very end of the movie. I found it weird that Bullock pressed one button and that she coincidentally pressed the right one. The writers could've made a more dramatic scene if she pressed a few wrong buttons first and then the correct one last. The jump scares weren't good and I don't think jump scares should be in a movie like this. There was really no point as to why George Clooney's character had to die. It was never explained and that was pretty disappointing as to killing off a character that could've had more development in the film for no reason. Would I recommend it? [MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS] Personally no, I found it to be kinda stupid really. The plot setup could've been avoided and killing off characters for no reason is kinda stupid as well. %Limbo Hengoku escaped the gravitational well to tell us about the outerworldly experience he had watching Gravity.
Gravity Genre: Sci-fi, Thriller Age Certification: PG-13 Director: Alfonso Cuarón Writers: Alfonso Cuarón, Jonás Cuarón Notable Actors: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney Release: 10/4/2013, English Plot Outline: A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after a catastrophe destroys their shuttle and leaves them adrift in orbit. Review Acting: 10/10 The acting was excellent and very believable. Sandra Bullock did a great job in this movie and so did George Clooney. Writing: 10/10 The story of Gravity was interesting and the characters are introduced properly. It had great character development. There are no unnecessary scenes either. Sound/Music: 10/10 The soundtrack was really fantastic. It fit each scene perfectly and positively influenced the moments perfectly. The sound effects were good, too. Visuals: 10/10 The visual of Gravity were out of this world. Everything looked so real and I felt like I was up there with the protagonists. The special effects and cinematography were awesome. I recommend seeing this movie in 3D. "Feels": 10/10 I did get emotionally invested in this movie because I was really feeling for Sandra Bullock. Throughout the movie I had this knot in my throat and I just kept rooting for her and in the end I was really happy for her. This movie as a whole was exciting, intense and emotionally stirring. Personal Experiences: Gravity was absurdly good. One thing I liked about it in particular is that everything was silent as things are getting wrecked by debris. Additionally, I liked that you experience things from Sandra Bullock's point of view and that George Clooney played the perfect astronaut. There is nothing I did not like about Gravity, it is now one of my favorite movies of all time. After it ended I wanted to watch it again because it was so spectacular. One thing this movie taught me is that space is scary. Overall Rating: 10/10 Would I recommend it? Yes I would because this is a movie every should see. If you're a space fanatic like I am, this movie will sink its claws into you, I promise. Our very own film connoisseur @Funnelby is back, this time telling us why No Country For Old Men has a place on his Top 10 films list.
No Country For Old Men Genre: Drama, Thriller Age Certification: 16+ Directors: The Coen Brothers Writers: The Coen Brothers, based on the Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name Notable Actors: Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson Release: 9/11/2007, English Synopsis: Llewelyn Moss, a welder and Vietnam veteran, finds the site of a drug deal gone bad, along with 2 million dollars and a survivor who is close to death. Review Acting: 9/10 Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem, who get the biggest shares of screen time, both deliver an excellent performance, with Bardem rightfully receiving an Academy Award for his portrayal of Anton Chigurh. Tommy Lee Jones, too, is very enjoyable and their combined efforts make for an outstanding movie. Writing: 10/10 No Country For Old Men truly is a fine piece of writing. It sets up its characters nicely and has one of the most notable villains of the recent years. The story feels very real, with many fantastic interactions between the protagonists. This is supplemented by great dialogue and a very crisp script, where every last scene is important. Sound/Music: 6/10 Probably the weakest point of No Country For Old Men, the sound effects and the soundtrack especially aren't highly memorable, but they don't diminish the overall quality either. Visuals: 7/10 No Country For Old Men played in Texas in the early 1980's, and has nice shots of the scenery, as well as strong lighting for the suspenseful moments. However, it's not a "feast for the eyes" by any stretch of the imagination. "Feels": 7/10 Every character in No Country For Old Men has a certain set of principles they're bound to, making them somewhat relatable. Most notably, Anton Chigurh is incredibly creepy and a perfect representation of a psychopath. Personal Experience: No Country For Old Men has a lot of themes, including nihilism, religion and ethics in general making it an experience to think about for more than just the two hours you spend watching it. Since I love character and dialogue based movies, No Country For Old Men instantly made it onto my top10 list of most enjoyable movies, and Javier Bardem made it onto the list of my favorite actors. All things considered, I found it to be an excellent achievement in filmmaking. Would I recommend it? For anyone enjoying dramas, great acting and highly interesting character, No Country For Old Men is a must-watch. The incredible %Limbo Hengoku has yet another review lined up. I wonder if he turns green while writing those!
The Incredible Hulk Genre: Sci-fi, Thriller, Action Age Certification: PG 13 Director: Louis Leterrier Writer: Zak Penn, Based on The Incredible Hulk by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby Notable Actors: Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, Tim Blake Nelson, Ty Burrell, William Hurt Release: 6/13/2008, English Plot Outline: Dr. Bruce Banner, thanks to a gamma ray experiment gone wrong, transforms into a giant green-skinned hulk whenever his heart rate gets too high. Meanwhile, a soldier uses the same technology to become an evil version of the original. Review Acting: 9/10 The acting was good and the actors are believable. Edward Norton was a really good Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk. He fit his role perfectly. Everyone else was good, too, but I felt like it could've been better. I also enjoyed the Hulk's voice over. Writing: 9/10 The story was interesting and the characters were introduced. There was decent character development and there are no unnecessary scenes. Sound/Music: 10/10 The sound track was enjoyable and fit each scene perfectly. It influenced each moment in a good way and the sound effects were cool, too. Visuals: 9/10 Everything looked great and added to overall experience. CGI was decent, but could've been better. "Feels": 7/10 I did feel emotionally invested because The Incredible Hulk had very touching moments. The relationship between Bruce Banner/The Hulk and Betty Ross was really touching. This movie as a whole was exciting and kept me at the edge of my seat. It pretty much had me happy the entire time. Personal Experiences: One of the things I loved about this movie was how they illustrated Bruce Banner dealing with The Hulk on a daily basis. I also loved the big contrast between Bruce Banner and The Hulk and also liked him as Bruce Banner. Furthermore, I enjoyed how, whenever Betty was involved in bad situations, The Hulk tries his hardest to protect her from any form of harm. I liked seeing Bruce Banner trying to cure himself and I love it when he "hulks out" and starts wrecking things. I'd say my least favorite part was when The Hulk and Abomination fought in all their CGI glory. It was entertaining and cool to watch but to me it was the least interesting part of the movie. But all in all this movie pleased me well. Overall rating: 8.5/10 Would I recommend it? Yes I would recommend because this is a movie that everyone should give a shot at. It's worth the watch. |
