Definitely not a comfortable, feel-good movie, but +Limbo Hengoku tells us what he thinks about the Oscar-winning 2013 film 12 Years A Slave.
12 Years A Slave Genre: Drama, Historical drama, Biographical film Age Certification: Rated R Director: Steve McQueen Writers: John Ridley Notable Actors: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Lupita Nyong'o, Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt, Alfre Woodard Released: October 18, 2013, original language English Plot Outline: In the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Review Acting: 10/10 Acting was excellent and very believable as well. Everyone in this movie did an excellent job. Writing: 10/10 Story is really interesting and not only introduced the characters but also developed as well. There were no unnecessary scenes. Sound/Music: 8/10 Soundtrack was good and fit each moment correctly. It correctly influenced each moment too. Visuals: 7/10 Everything looked great for the most part the scenery looked good and had good shots of the characters. Feels: 10/10 This movie had me shocked the entire time. It was hard to grasp the concept that someone could just beat and murder somebody because they are your property. I don't see things like that on a regular basis. Throughout the movie I felt really disturbed and really bad for the main character, it was sad. This movie had me rooting for the guy to not give up. It’s one of those movies that you can’t sugar-coat at all. Also I teared up in this movie. Would I recommend it? Yes, it is worth watching and in my opinion one of the best movies of its year. It's not easy to watch and not easy to watch more than once but it's definitely good and worth it in the end. Overall Rating: 9.5/10 Personal Experience: Throughout the entire movie I was shocked and really disturbed. When I was in high school they showed me these movie clips that don’t capture the brutality of it all. The injustice of buying, trading, and selling people like they’re trading cards. This movie accurately captures it all and it’s so unapologetically brutal and in my face. I liked that this movie portrays the subject in a really in-your-face way, I found it very effective. Another thing I liked was the acting, in my opinion it was flawless and believable. Everyone did a great job. But Michael Fassbender's character was what baffled me. The monologues he gave were in-human. In the end I left the theater really shocked and said these exact words "Oh my god what did I just watch." |
