Baird Notable Actor(s): Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit, Jamie Chung Release Information: 7 November 2014, english Plot outline: The special bond that develops between plus-sized inflatable robot Baymax, and prodigy Hiro Hamada, who team up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes. Review Acting 10/10: The voice acting in this movie was fantastic and they really fit each character really well. Sounded really believable. Writing 8/10: The story of the movie is very intriguing and the characters are introduced. Though the characters don't really have a lot of development. I felt like they were just thrown in there. This movie does has some pacing issues which shouldn't happen for a 1 1/2 hour movie but quickly picks up. Soundtrack 8/10: The soundtrack in the movie was pretty good. It fit each scene pretty nicely and even influenced the moments positively. Some of them I did not really like. The sound effects were good, too. Visuals 10/10: The visuals for the movie is very good. Almost to the point of looking real at some parts. Feels 10/10: I really connected with the character Hero because I've experienced some of the things he went through in the movie. As a whole this movie was touching Personal Experiences What I love about this movie is that they made science awesome before the adventure even began. I like science so it was really intriguing to see. I thought the film was a really fun time, the world looked awesome, and the characters are really likable. Also thought the villain was pretty cool, too Overall Rating 8/10 Would I recommend it? If you have family, you could sit down and watch it together. Everyone will be entertained, I guarantee it. Age Certification: Rated R Directer: Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen Writer(s): Dan Sterling, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Dan Sterling Notable Actor(s): James Franco, Seth Rogen, Randall ParK Release Information: 24 December 2014, English Plot Outline: Dave Skylark and producer Aaron Rapoport run the celebrity tabloid show "Skylark Tonight." When they land an interview with a surprise fan, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, they are recruited by the CIA to turn their trip to Pyongyang into an assassination mission. Review Acting 7/10: The actinf in the movie was pretty great. I liked the chemistry James Franco and Seth Rogan had in this film, I felt like they both fit their roles perfectly. Although I felt like some could have done better in the movie. But they all made their characters likable for what they were, so that's good. Writing 7/10: The story of this movie is interesting and the characters are introduced. I thought the jokes in the movie were really funny but then it started getting repetitive. Also, the film slows down at ibe point, too, but then picks back up. There are no unnecessary scenes. Soundtrack 9/10: The soundtrack this movie is really good to the point where I actually started listening to some of it on a regular. It also fit each scene perfectly and even made the comedic moments even funnier Visuals 9/10: Visuals were pretty good and it added to overall experience Feels 7/10: In a way, I liked the friendship James Franco's and Randall ParK's characters had. I thought it was pretty touching. I didn't really bond with the characters either. Movie is very funny thouh. Personal Experiences: I honestly could not help but look forward to the movie. One of things I liked about the movie is the chemistry between James Franco and Seth Rogan because of the contrast between the two. I can't really think of any negatives about the movie aside from the repetitive jokes. This movie was raunchy and very hysterical. I didn't really need to happen but I'm glad it did. In the end, I thought it was pretty decent. Overall Rating 7/10 Decent Would I recommend it? All I can say is know what you're getting into. This team has made films in the past, if you didn't like them then is film is not your cup of tea. WHIPLASH #Limbo HenGoku is back with yet another movie review Genre: Drama, Music
Age Certification: Rated R Directer: Damien Chazelle Writer(s): Damien Chazelle Notable actor(s): Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons Release Information: 15 October 2014 (english) Plot Outline: A promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential. Review Acting 10/10: The acting in this movie is absolutely flawless. J.K. Simmons delivers one of the best performances that I have ever seen on film. The acting was very believable and made the characters likable for what they were. Writing 9/10: I thought the writing in this movie was pretty good. The story of the movie is interesting, the characters are introduced and also had some good development. The dialogue in the movie was pretty nice, too. It's not a fast pace though. There are no unnecessary scenes. Soundtrack 8/10: The soundtrack in the movie was good to listen to, I found myself tapping my feet every time the characters were performing. Visuals 8/10: I thought everything in the movie looked great. It had good camera angles and all. It indeed added to overall experience. Feels 10/10: I was emotionally invested in this movie. It's very, very intense. You can't help but feel bad for Miles Teller's character in the movie. I just wanted him to succeed and endure what he was going through. Personal Experiences: This is quite possibly the most intense film I have ever seen to date. I have not bitten my nails as hard as I did for any other movie the way I did for this one. The more I think about this movie, the better it gets. There is absolutely nothing I did not like about this movie. Overall rating 8.5/10 Watch it Would I recommend it? I definitely recommend a movie like this because it's truly good. Honest to god this movie will sink its claws into you. I'll say if you have anxiety problems and don't like it when someone is giving someone else grief then this might be a negative for you. However, it's probably what this movie is going for anyway. Still watch imo +Factor with another movie review The Inbetweeners 2 Genre: Comedy
Age Certification: Rated R Directors: Damon Beesley, Iain Morris Writers: Damon Beesley, Iain Morris Notable Actors: Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas Release Date: 8/6/2014 Synopsis: Jay, Neil, Simon, and Will reunite in Australia for a holiday. Review Acting: 10/10 I loved how the four friends made their characters lovable, enjoyable, and gave themselves their own charm that added to the overall experience of the film. Writing: 10/10 Everything that was written (except for one line) was absolutely spectacular. There were no unnecessary scenes and almost no awkward and unfunny moments in the movie. The story is very simple, but that simplicity doesn't take away from the overall quality. Soundtrack: 6/10 The soundtrack that was used wasn't really meant to be relied on to add to the experience to the movie, not much here. Visuals: 6/10 Again, not much here since this movie doesn't rely on the visuals. "Feels": 10/10 I was very interested in the characters, they gave their own beneficial charm to the film. They avoided all types of cliches regarding how they would deal with the things that happen to them. I could bond with the characters very well, knowing how well they were described throughout the movie. I felt very happy after watching this movie and I'll never forget the experience I had with it. Personal Experience: I had lots of fun watching The Inbetweeners 2. I really loved seeing the gang on a new adventure and seeing them handle the problems that come their way in the usual way they confront them while keeping their characters perfectly. Would I recommend it? Yes, this is a very good movie and is exemplary in how comedies should be. Overall Rating: 9/10 A comedy diamond in the haystack. Our very own #Calyxium took to the cinema to watch the new Marvel blockbuster Guardians Of The Galaxy. Let's see if it holds up to the criticism of TVBF's finest.
Despite being a huge Marvel, superhero, and sci-fi fan, I regarded the buzz for Guardians of the Galaxy with a lot of scepticism. Two of the heroes are a giant tree and a talking raccoon, for goodness' sake, and I consider myself well past the age when it is appropriate to find anthropomorphic foliage and furry critters charming. Imagine my chagrin, therefore, when I find myself forced to say that the walking plant and the talking raccoon really do steal the show. Guardians of the Galaxy Genre: Comedy, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Action. Age Certification: PG-13 / 12A. Director: James Gunn. Writers: James Gunn, Nicole Perlman, based on the comic book by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Notable Actors: Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana. Released: 31st July 2014, English. Plot Outline: Light years from Earth, 26 years after being abducted, Peter Quill - an intergalactic scavenger and outlaw - finds he's bitten off more than he can chew when his newest score is being hunted by the terrifying Ronan the Accuser. Review Acting: 6.8/10 The acting in this film is incredibly polarized. On the one hand, the performance Bradley Cooper gives for his character is outstanding. Rocket, ironically, is by far the most believable, human character and Cooper delivers perfectly. Likewise, against all odds Vin Diesel (playing a sentient tree!) manages to bring the character of Groot to life and make him seem considerably more human than any of the human characters, although how much of that is Vin Diesel and how much is excellent CG1, I have no idea. Chris Pratt as Peter Quill does the best he can with the writing he's given, and pulls off most of the comic moments very well. In contrast, Zoe Saldana's performance is flat and mediocre, Lee Pace as Ronan is another pedestrian supervillain with confused and unclear motives, and does nothing to inject life or menace into his character. Michael Rooker, best known for his role on The Walking Dead, gives an astonishingly poor performance, over-acting to the point of disbelief, and delivering one cringe-worthy cheesy moment after another. It's all downhill from there, with the rest of the supporting cast only adding to the embarrassing cheese-fest. Writing: 5.6/10 When the writing is good, it's wonderful, but when it's bad, it's dreadful. This is a long entry, so I'm splitting it into sections to score individually.
Sound/Music: 8/10 Although the music wasn't to my personal taste, it was a plot point and the music selections and timing perfectly punctuated the tone of the film, and of certain action sequences, as well as adding to the character of Peter Quill. Visuals: 10/10 I'd like to rate this higher. This was, without doubt, the best visual cinematic experience I've had. Avatar at the IMAX, eat your heart out. I saw this in 3D and was impressed by just how much 3D technology has improved in the last couple of years. The special effects were magnificent, the CGI and costuming were absolutely perfect, which was of particular importance in adding emotional depth to the characters of Rocket and Groot. Beyond that, the visual design for characters, costumes, ships and objects, and in particular the huge settings and starscapes were absolutely breathtaking. They were ingenious, creative, colourful and stunningly beautiful. "Feels": 3/10 Feels is something I really look for in a film. I want to emotionally connect with the characters, care about them, worry for them, hurt with them. I didn't get that here. This could partially be because I had part of the film spoiled for me before I watched it, but when that scene came I thought it was handled clunkily at first. There was only one moment when I actually connected with a character and felt something beyond the general humour and fun of the film. Personal Experience: [MILD PLOT SPOILERS] So far, this review has been pretty critical. I should stress that I hugely enjoyed this film, and I had a great time watching it. If I was only scoring "comedy", "fun", and "visuals" it'd be a resounding 10/10. Unfortunately that's not the case, and the film does have its problems. In spite of that, however, it's extremely fun to watch with non-stop, beautifully choreographed action, genuinely funny humour, absolutely amazing visuals, and some really great characters. I particularly enjoyed the ships that connected together to form the huge shield, and the visual design of Knowhere was as ingenious as it was gorgeous. While the outlaw crew of space cowboys isn't a new idea (*coughFireflycough*) it's still an incredibly fun premise to watch, and a nice change from the previous Marvel films. I was hoping to connect more emotionally with it, but the only moment I did, and consequently my favourite part of the film was watching Rocket have a vulnerable moment when he expresses his frustration at being constantly reviewed as a rodent when he had no control over his creation. This film set-up events for future Marvel films, and I will be really excited to see the Guardians of the Galaxy return, and see them tackle Thanos with the Avengers. I spent almost every moment of the film delighted, either by the action sequences, stunning design and visuals, or laughing. The moments that I didn't, however, I was cringing at the awful support characters, confused by the plot holes or annoyed by the lazy writing of poorer characters or character decisions that didn't make sense. Would you recommend this movie to others? I'd definitely recommend this film to others. Although I suspect it was aimed at a younger audience, and I missed some of the humour, there was plenty for adults to enjoy. It certainly wasn't perfect, but in spite of its flaws it was incredibly enjoyable, a 2 hour fun-fest of action, genuinely funny humour and the most breathtakingly-stunning visuals I've ever seen. I'd recommend it based on the visuals alone, but the film also brings plenty of fun, a couple of genuinely loveable characters and a lot of humour as well. Overall Rating: 6.7/10 Averaged from above scores. However, as I said, this film was incredibly enjoyable and I'd certainly recommend seeing it. Factor gives us another TV show review, this time the short-lived comedy show Henry Danger.
Henry Danger Episodes: 8 Genre: Comedy Age Certification: TV-Y7 Director: Dan Schneider Writer: Dan Schneider Notable Actors: Cooper Barnes Released: 7/26/2014 Plot Outline: Comedy about 13-year-old Henry who lands a part-time job as Danger Boy, a sidekick in training to super crime fighter Captain Man. Review Acting: 1/10 I hated all the characters, they were all annoying and not enjoyable at all. Really just a nuisance at best and worst. Writing: 1/10 Nothing was funny and just plain awkward and painful to watch. There were many irrelevant things in scenes and many plot holes. Visuals: 1/10 It wasn't funny or enjoyable so the visuals wouldn't help either. Sound and Music 3/10: This movie played really cheesy music that wasn't entertaining and didn't really effect the comedy and made it even more unbearable. Visuals: 1/10 It looked very cheesy and couldn't be taken seriously and looked very stupid. "Feels": 1/10 All the characters were annoying, mean-spirited, and just not funny at all Personal Experience: [MINOR PLOT SPOILERS] Where do I start, this movie is all kinds of bad. The characters are unfunny, annoying, and some are just mean-spirited. There's this one little girl who's all about Facebook and how she cries when she loses a friend on it and has to go to the parent's house to talk about it. WHAT IN THE WORLD??!!! Why are you letting your 7 year old daughter on Facebook? I can't explain something so stupid as that. Also, the movie skipped a whole fight scene. Not showing off powers or any bonding with characters, nope nothing. This "Captain Man" (already a silly name) is not funny but just mean-spirited. The villain, "The Toddler" is just your basic blow up the city cliche villain. Nothing special about him really. Also, he has a really annoying voice. The laugh track really made no sense and shouldn't have been there Would I recommend it? No. It's not funny, annoying, stupid and everything else that makes something looks bad. Overall Rating: 1/10 A waste of time, stay away from it. Good fences make good neighbours, but that might not cut it here. +Limbo Hengoku is here to give us his assessment of the Spring comedy Neighbors.
Neighbors Genre: Comedy Age Certification: Rated R Director: Nicholas Stoller Writers: Andrew J. Cohen, Brendan O'Brien Notable Actors: Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Dave Franco Released: May 9, 2014, original language English Plot Outline: A couple with a newborn baby faces unexpected difficulties after being forced to live next to a fraternity house. Review Acting: 8/10 The acting was solid and most of the time believable. Zac Efron was likeable when he needed to be likeable and douche when he needed to be douche. Seth Rogen played his character really well in this movie. Rose Byrne, too, was very enjoyable. Others did a decent job but their acting was sometimes underwhelming. The cast had good chemistry as well. They were all enjoyable and funny. Writing: 8/10 The story was interesting, enjoyable, and funny. The characters were introduced and had some character development. There weren't really any unnecessary scenes. I found the humour and dialogue to be funny as well. Sound/Music: 7/10 The soundtrack was okay to hear. It fitted each moment well, and accentuated humorous moments. Visuals: 6/10 This movie is dialogue based so the visuals lacked impact, but looked solid overall. It looked really nice and had a couple of great shots. Feels: 8/10 For the most part it was enjoyable and funny. I related to Zack Efron's character because I used to be the same way and I somewhat pitied him. He was an enjoyable character but deep down I felt like he was just this kid who didn't know what he wanted to do with his life. Aside from that, this movie had me happy the entire time. It had a lot of heart, too. Would I recommend it? Yes, I would recommend it because it's like the one summer time comedy that you want to see every year. It was funny, the cast was enjoyable and I liked the competition the two houses had going on. It's really worth the shot. Overall Rating: 8/10 Personal Experience: The thing I loved most about this movie was that it knew what it was. It knew it was supposed to be an 1 1/2 hour long so it was a 1 1/2 hour long. Plus they still found ways to shoehorn heartfelt moments in there. There wasn't really anything I didn't like. I also liked the absurdity of it. Stuff like that can't happen in real life, but it was still fun to watch. He's your friendly neighbourhood reviewer, +Limbo Hengoku here to tell us about Spidey's latest film, Marvel's The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Sci-fi Age Certification: PG-13 Director: Marc Webb Writers: Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner. Based on The Amazing Spider-Man by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko Notable Actors: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, Sally Field Released: May 2, 2014, original language English Plot Outline: Peter Parker runs the gauntlet as the mysterious company Oscorp sends up a slew of super villains against him, impacting his life. Review Acting: 9/10 Acting was solid and believable. Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man was really good in the movie. Everyone did solid work overall as their respective characters. Also Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone worked really well together in this movie. Writing: 7/10 The story was interesting and introduced the characters well. Also had some good character development. There are moments when the story dragged on and it felt repetitive. It could have been condensed. Visuals: 9/10 The characters looked good in their own unique way. Also liked the cinematography as well. The movie looks really cool as well when Spider-Man does his Spider-Man things. When he free falls you see his spider suit rippling like he's really doing a free fall. On top of that the scenery also looked great as well. Sound/Music: 8/10 The soundtrack sounded really cool and fit each situation well, even influencing emotional moments or punctuating action scenes. The sound effects were good as well. I also really liked the Electro's theme song, it went really with him. Feels: 7/10 There were a couple of very touching moments in this movie and it feeds into it overall but I just feel like it went on for to long. Also liked the reconnecting relationship Peter and Harry had in this movie, it was very relate-able. There are very emotional scenes as well in this movie. I choked up in one part of the movie. Aside from that the whole movie kept me happy and excited. Would I recommend it? Yes I would recommend this movie because it is a cool movie. It looked great, it was exciting and has all the cool Spider-Manish things you would want in this movie and you will like it. Overall Rating: 7.5/10 Personal Experience: This movie had me conflicted. There were scenes I liked that were incredibly emotional and I thought they were very effective. However, there were also scenes or concepts that I didn't like, and thought that they were stupid, sloppy and poorly executed. In the end this movie was a fun time but wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. I wanted this movie to be like movie of the year or something. I wanted it to be the best Spider-Man experience. But I still enjoyed it anyway. My favorite parts were when Spider-Man used his Spider-sense. “But it is the nature of stars to cross, and never was Shakespeare more wrong than when he has Cassius note, ‘The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars / But in ourselves.”
Factor is back and this time he's reviewing The Fault In Our Stars, the new film adaptation of the outrageously popular young-adult tearjerker/romance novel of the same name. The Fault In Our Stars Genre: Drama, Romance Age Certification: PG-13 Director: Josh Boone Writers: Scott Neustadter, Michael H. Weber, John Green (author of the book) Notable Actors: Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Nat Wolff Release Date: June 6 2014 Synopsis: Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel's other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. Review Acting: 10/10 I really enjoyed the acting and the characters felt very alive, different, and overall just enjoyable in every sense. Writing: 10/10 I felt that the writing was very interesting and was a helpful guide for understanding the characters entirely. Some of the lines in this movie really took me away and got me so interested in the movie. Sound and Music: 5/10 There's not much of a soundtrack in this movie that catches my eye and the fact it's pretty limited to begin with. Not much here. Visuals: 8/10 As a romantic film I can say that the visuals made were very well made and added a huge effect on some of the more dramatic scenes in the movie. "Feels": 10/10 If I could rate this higher I would. The movie delivered when it got tense and when it got emotional and when it got straight up sad. All I can say is this when you are trying to make a romantic movie, look at this one for the emotional parts. Would I recommend it? I would totally recommend it to any romance movie seeker. This movie shows what true love really is and not many romance movies can do this, this movie is obviously one of a kind. Overall Rating: 8/10 An example of true love! Personal Experience: [MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS] Click "Read More" to view. User +Limbo Hengoku is joining our cast of reviewers by telling us what he thinks about the latest instalment in the Man vs Monkey saga, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Genre: Sci-fi, Drama, Action Age Certification: PG-13 Director: Matt Reeves Writers: Mark Bomback, Rick Jaffa ,Amanda Silver Notable Actors: Andy Serkis,Jason Clarke,Gary Oldman, Keri Russell,Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhe Released: July 11, 2014, original language English Plot Outline: In the wake of a disaster that changed the world, the growing and genetically evolving apes find themselves at a critical point with the human race Review Acting: 9/10 Acting was pretty good and believable. The humans in the movie were good too. Jason Clarke as the main human was really good but he was eclipsed by Ceasar. Andy Serkis was really good as Ceasar and the others that played the other apes did well also. Writing: 9/10 The story of this movie is this movie was well written, The characters were introduced and had really good character development as well. Visuals: 10/10 The visuals were really amazing and the apes look real. You get a close up of an ape's face and it looks like a real ape's face. Really impressive CGI. Sound/Music: 9/10 I thought the soundtrack fitted each situation well and it influenced each moment as well. Sound effects were good also. Feels: 8/10 There were touching moments in this movie, I even teared up in a couple of scenes. They also had good relationships in the movie. I liked the growing connection between the main human and Ceasar. Other than that movie was really exciting and it kept me at edge of my seat Personal Experience: [MILD SPOILERS] (Highlight to read) I really enjoyed this movie. It was really cool seeing those apes interact with each other. It was an entire culture, they’re primitive, sure but it was there. They were sentient, they were learning and they even had schools. Even had a code of conduct and laws. I had a really fun time watching this movie. This movie had social implications and I love that. It made the movie not so black and white. The movie was tense it kept me at the edge of my seat. One of the characters I enjoyed was Ceasar. He was awesome once again in this movie. He had such command over the tribe. Another character I really enjoyed was Koba the ape. I walked out of the theater pretty happy. Would I recommend it others? I'd definitely recommend this movie to anyone. One of my favorite movies this year. The movie looked great it had great CGI, it was exciting and had good action But it was also smart and had good character development and had good relationships. This is a movie I feel that everyone should watch and give a shot at. Overall Rating: 9/10 |
