Horror expert-in-training %Limbo Hengoku saw another piece of frightening motion picture, The Conjuring, and shares his experience with us.
The Conjuring Genre: Horror Age Certification: Rated R Director: James Wan Writers: Chad Hayes, Carey W. Hayes Notable Actors: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor Release: 7/19/2013, English Plot Outline: Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. Review Acting: 9/10 The acting was great and very believable. Even the children did well. When they were supposed to be frightened, you actually believe they were all frightened. When they were supposed to be all stoic, you could actually tell that they were scared but didn't wanna show people they were scared. Writing: 8/10 The Conjuring is interesting and the characters are introduced properly. There is also some good character development. But, like any good haunting story, the build up is pretty slow for the first half. There are no unneccessary scenes. Sound/Music: 8/10 I thought the soundtrack was good and it influenced the moments positively. Additionally, the sound effects were great. Visuals: 9/10 The visuals were really great and added to overall experience. The spirits looked real and there were some good shots of the characters and scenery. Visual effects were awesome, too. "Feels": 10/10 I did get emotionally invested because it was incredibly frightening. I was also rooting for the family to get through their troubles. The Conjuring will scare the life out of you and, believe me, you will not sleep for a few nights after seeing it. Personal Experiences: The Conjuring was scary. I liked the paranormal investigators, because they debunk things. They ultimately go into scenarios as skeptics. Another thing I liked was that it excels on the tension aspect. For instance, the camera will be panning into this really dark corner and someone's scared to death as if they're seeing something, causing me to get gooseumps all over and I'm just like "What's gonna happen?" The Conjuring is really effective, it's really creepy and has a lot of good tension. It's not gonna be original material but the execution of it is actually really good. After seeing it, I couldn't sleep well for about a week. Overall Rating: 8/10 Would I recommend it? If you like a good horror then you'll like The Conjuring. Really worth the watch! %Limbo Hengoku had a horrifying experience he wants to share with us: the movie Sinister
Sinister Genre: Horror, Mystery, Thriller Age Certification: Rated R Director: Scott Derrickson Writers: Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill Notable Actors: Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, Fred Thompson, James Ransone, Clare Foley, Michael Hall D'Addario Release: 10/5/2012, English Plot Outline: A true-crime writer finds a cache of 8mm home movies films that suggest the murder he is currently researching is the work of a serial killer whose career dates back to the 1960s. Review Acting: 7.5/10 I thought the acting was okay and believable most of the time. But at times, when they were supposed to be scared, they were not really believable. Writing: 8/10 The story is interesting and the characters are introduced properly. There is some character development as well. Characters are interesting and there are no unnecessary scenes. Though, at times, the story is very predictable. Sound/Music: 7/10 I thought the soundtrack was okay and it fit each scene well. Sound effects were good, too, but nothing was really outstanding. Visuals: 8/10 The visuals was good and the spirits looked very real, positively adding to the overall experience. Sinister had good shots of the characters. In addition, I thought the special effects looked pretty neat, but some scenes would've needed a little more work. "Feels": 8/10 I did get emotionally invested because Sinister is really terrifying, but I didn't really bond with any of the characters. I was, however, rooting for them to overcome their situation. Furthermore, the spirits themselves will make your hair stand up with fear. As a whole, Sinister is a horrifying experience. Personal Experiences: When I went to watch Sinister, I was like yeah, this is gonna be a just another scary movie, I've seen it all before. Boy was I wrong, it scared the living daylights out of me. I was surprised by the first shots. It just leaves me going "holy cow, so this is what I am in for". It's just disturbing imagery, It's not the last time you're gonna see it. There's not really much I didn't like about this movie but I got home not being able to sleep. Overall Rating: 7.5/10 Would I recommend it? If you're looking for movie that will scare you to death then Sinister is for you. Give it a shot. Don't worry, you don't have to be religious to enjoy our next movie review by %Limbo Hengoku, who tells us all about Priest.
Priest Genre: Action, Fantasy, Horror Age Certification: Pg-13 Director: Scott Stewart Writers: Cory Goodman, Based on Priest by Min-Woo Hyung Notable Actors: Paul Bettany, Karl Urban, Lily Collins Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q Release: 5/13/2011 Plot Outline: A priest disobeys church law to track down the vampires who kidnapped his niece. Review Acting: 5/10 The acting was okay and believable half the time. Most of the cast didn't really do great though. Karl Urban was decent but for everyone else you could tell they were acting. They weren't particularly likable. Writing: 2/10 The story is interesting but the characters were not introduced properly. The characters didn't really develop as well and they were boring and forgettable. They meant nothing to the story at all and even the main characters were boring. The script was just disjointed and there are some plot holes as well as unnecessary scenes in Priest. Sound/Music: 4/10 The soundtrack was average and but didn't fit some of the scenes at all. It didn't influence the moments properly either. The sound effects weren't to my liking. Visuals: 4/10 The visuals were okay but sometimes just looked incredibly fake. The CGI vampires in this movie looked fake as well. The special effects didn't look great either. "Feels": 1/10 I didn't get emotionally invested in Priest. I didn't bond with or care for any of the characters in this movie. This movie is not for you if you're looking for feels. Personal Experiences: To me, Priest was terrible. One of the biggest things I did not like about it were the vampires that weren't really vampires, they just looked like the lickers from Resident Evil 2. I wanted the vampires to look like legit vampires and these didn't look like intelligent beings. They just looked like animals that you were supposed to get rid of. I didn't like the characters at all, too, and the main villain, who had some potential, ended up not great either. In the end, Priest is just straight up trash to me. Overall Rating: 3/10 not good Would I recommend it? No I would not this movie is terrible and you shouldn't waste your time watching such garbage. Our movie-review-machine %Limbo Hengoku isn't scared easily. Let's see if 2010's Legion did the trick.
Legion Genre: Action, Fantasy, Horror Age Certification: R Director: Scott Stewart Writers: Peter Schink, Scott Stewart Notable Actors: Paul Bettany, Lucas Black, Tyrese Gibson, Adrianne Palicki, Charles S. Dutton, Jon Tenney, Kevin Durand, Willa Holland, Kate Walsh, Dennis Quaid Release: 1/22/2010, English Plot Outline: A group of strangers fight for the welfare of humanity. Review Acting: 4/10 The acting was subpar and most of the time unbelievable. Most of the cast were not good and you could actually tell they were acting. Writing: 2/10 Legion had an interesting premise but the execution of it was really terrible. The characters aren't introduced properly and there wasn't really any character development at all. The pacing of the movie was really bad and the characters are forgettable, they really offer nothing for the story. Also there are huge plot holes that will leave you scratching your head. They threw in a couple of "deep" monologues that could have been cool but ultimately they only draw out the story. There is a decent number of unnecessary scenes. Sound/Music: 4/10 I didn't really like the soundtrack to be completely honest. It did, however, fit some scenes well, while in some of them it felt out of place. Also, the sound effects were subpar. They didn't positively influece the moments either. Visuals: 5/10 The visuals were okay but sometimes didn't look right to me. Special effects weren't outstanding either. You could tell some of the angels and monsters were fake. "Feels": 1/10 I was not emotionally invested at all. I couldn't bond with any of the characters, I just didn't care for any of them. If you're looking for characters to bond with or a movie with a decent amount of feels, this movie is not for you. Personal Experiences: [MINOR PLOT SPOILERS] Legion was terrible. I honestly wanted to like this movie as an action movie but I ended up hating it. Poor construction, bad execution and generic characters is what makes this movie bad to me. A death squad of angles closing in on mankind making its last stand with a rogue angel should have at least been entertaining, but it wasn't. Ultimately, to me, this movie was a bad version of The Prophecy mixed with a bad version of The Mist and mixed with a really bad version of Terminator. I remember walking out this movie thinking I would rather watch a slow, agonizing career suicide preformed by The Rock. I was not pleased at all. Overall Rating: 2/10 Not good Would I recommend it? No I would not recommend this movie. Do yourself a favor and skip this horrid movie. |
