%Limbo Hengoku is back, this time reviewing the 2013 sci-fi Elysium.
Elysium Genre: Action, Drama, Thriller, Sci-fi Age Certification: Rated R Director: Neill Blomkamp Writer: Neill Blomkamp Notable Actors: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura, William Fichtner Released: 8/7/2013 (Taiwan), 8/9/2013 (United States). English Plot Outline: In the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. One man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds. Review Acting: 9/10 Everyone in this movie did a great job, they were believable and likeable. But the highlight was Sharlto Copley. He did a really great job portraying his character was remarkable as villain. Clearly the best thing about Elysium. Writing: 8/10: The story was interesting and engrossing. It introduced the characters and had some character development. As Elysium establishes its world, it gives a lot of information in a short amount of time, so it feels like it's moving too fast. It's a bit overloading at times but that does not hold the entire movie back. Additionally, Elysium had some good human elements to it. Directing: 9/10 I enjoyed how Blomkamp incorporated social issues that we see in our world and put them into this movie. He poured a lot of passion into Elysium, further differentiating it from the less inspired works. Sound/Music: 9/10 The soundtrack was pleasant. It fit each moment and positively influenced each scene. The sound effects added to the overall experience, too. Visuals: 8/10 Elysium looks fantastic. It had good shots of the characters and scenery, in addition to remarkable cinematography. "Feels": 6/10 I wasn't really emotionally invested, but Elysium was very exciting and suspenseful. I could, however, barely bond with any of the characters. There are some sad moments in where I did feel bad for the characters. Furthermore, Elysium had a bit of humour to it as well. I was really rooting for the main character's survival. Aside from that, I was happy the entire time I was watching. Personal Experience: Elysium's setting was really interesting and very engrossing to experience. I was immersed in the world and actually felt that It was real. It's honestly just a continuation of what we have on earth. Surprisingly, most of Elysium takes place on earth, but that did not bother me. I especially liked the villain, because I was really impressed with his portrayal. Aside from that, there was barely anything I didn't like. It was very enjoyable. Overall Rating: 8/10 Would I recommend it? Yes, because Elysium is a good movie that I believe everyone should give a shot at. It represents the sci-fi genre well and had great protagonists. If you're looking for a good sci-fi movie that also has a lot of really good human elements to it, you'll enjoy Elysium. Definitely not a comfortable, feel-good movie, but +Limbo Hengoku tells us what he thinks about the Oscar-winning 2013 film 12 Years A Slave.
12 Years A Slave Genre: Drama, Historical drama, Biographical film Age Certification: Rated R Director: Steve McQueen Writers: John Ridley Notable Actors: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Lupita Nyong'o, Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt, Alfre Woodard Released: October 18, 2013, original language English Plot Outline: In the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Review Acting: 10/10 Acting was excellent and very believable as well. Everyone in this movie did an excellent job. Writing: 10/10 Story is really interesting and not only introduced the characters but also developed as well. There were no unnecessary scenes. Sound/Music: 8/10 Soundtrack was good and fit each moment correctly. It correctly influenced each moment too. Visuals: 7/10 Everything looked great for the most part the scenery looked good and had good shots of the characters. Feels: 10/10 This movie had me shocked the entire time. It was hard to grasp the concept that someone could just beat and murder somebody because they are your property. I don't see things like that on a regular basis. Throughout the movie I felt really disturbed and really bad for the main character, it was sad. This movie had me rooting for the guy to not give up. It’s one of those movies that you can’t sugar-coat at all. Also I teared up in this movie. Would I recommend it? Yes, it is worth watching and in my opinion one of the best movies of its year. It's not easy to watch and not easy to watch more than once but it's definitely good and worth it in the end. Overall Rating: 9.5/10 Personal Experience: Throughout the entire movie I was shocked and really disturbed. When I was in high school they showed me these movie clips that don’t capture the brutality of it all. The injustice of buying, trading, and selling people like they’re trading cards. This movie accurately captures it all and it’s so unapologetically brutal and in my face. I liked that this movie portrays the subject in a really in-your-face way, I found it very effective. Another thing I liked was the acting, in my opinion it was flawless and believable. Everyone did a great job. But Michael Fassbender's character was what baffled me. The monologues he gave were in-human. In the end I left the theater really shocked and said these exact words "Oh my god what did I just watch." |
